Institute for Communicative and Cognitive Neurosciences [ICCONS] is under the guidance of the Society for Rehabilitation of Cognitive and Communicative Disorders (SRCCD) which is an autonomous body registered under the Travancore-Cochin Literary, Scientific and Charitable Societies Act, 1955. The Society has started its institutions, the Institute for Communicative and Cognitive Neurosciences (ICCONS) at Trivandrum and Kavalappara, Shoranur, Palakkad on 2nd of October 1998 and 16th November 2000 respectively.
Institute for Communicative and Cognitive Neuro Sciences [ICCONS] is the first institute of its kind in the Asian countries for comprehensive multidisciplinary management, research and rehabilitation of cognitive and communicative disorders affecting all age groups. The Institute has established its activities in the field of Autism Spectrum Disorder(ASD), Learning Disability, Developmental Language Disorders, Mental Retardation, Cerebral Palsy, Hearing Impairment, Adult Stroke and related problems, Parkinson’s Disease, Dementia, Aphasia and other Genetic and Metabolic Disorders affecting Speech, Language and Cognitive functions in children and adults. The clinical, academic, research and development activities of the institution are formulated in the recent framework of WHO that includes the management of disabilities from acute care management to chronic phase rehabilitation, job placement, special education and vocational training. The clinical and academic activities of the institute is managed by a multidisciplinary team comprised of Neurologist, Pediatrician, ENT Specialist, Psychiatrist, Physiotherapist, Speech Language Pathologist, Audiologist, Clinical Psychologist, Clinical Linguist and Special Educator.
ICCONS at Shoranur is an advanced center with inpatient and outpatient facilities, college for paramedical courses like BASLP and MASLP , and a special education school for children with Cognitive Language Disorders. The hospital provides treatment and rehabilitation for specific disorders of cognition, memory and language - like ASD, Dementia, Learning Disability, Stroke, Aphasia and various developmental disorders due to Genetic and Metabolic causes affecting children, adolescents, adults and elderly.
The name of Sri. V. Govindankutty a Philanthropist from Kavalappara Shoranur is to be written in golden letters in the history and milestone of ICCONS Shoranur. He decided to donate 4 acres and 27.75 cents of Land and Incomplete building belonging to V.K. Amma Trust, Kavalappara, Shoranur, Palakkad (District) to SRCCD.
