Disabilities should be addressed at the doorstep of the needy. Community Based Rehabilitation(CBR) is the crux of this principle. CBR was developed as a response to the need to reach people with disabilities at the community level. The cost involved in the transportation of the disabled to far located institutions leads to social and financial burden to the family. CBR is the answer for this. Community outreach centres can be established with participation local administrative body or Voluntary organization/ NGO or parental and peoples participation forums. ICCONS started community outreach centres at Kottayam in collaboration Lions Club Kottayam.
This community out reach center is developed in collaboration with Lions ClubofKottayam and is providing treatment and training to children and adults with various types of developmental disabilities. The center also has well established Audiology and Electro physiology Labs Developed with financial assistance from Lions Club International. The center is providing daily training to children and adults with types of cognitive communicative disorders and also conducting a special school. A monthly review clinic for the patients is conducted by the Director directly who is also a Neurologists in the project. It is proposed that in due course of time adequate participation from local sources such as Medical College, Kottayam will be sought to provide the services on regular basis to more number of children from this area.
Initially a Community Outreach Center was established in 1998 at Changaramkulam. Subsequently as ICCONS Shoranur came up, the functioning of this center was stopped as it was close to Shoranur.
